The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland (ICCI), which is the largest mosque in the country, has temporarily closed its doors after a serious incident took place on 19 April 2025. A sign outside the centre in Clonskeagh, Dublin, explained that a deeply troubling attack on the mosque, the centre, and its board members had forced them to shut down for the safety of everyone. Although full details were not made public at first, this caused a lot of wild rumours and confusion across social media.

Later, the ICCI released a statement clarifying that during a closed-door meeting for parents of Quranic School students, some individuals tried to disrupt the meeting and turn it into a larger open gathering. Unfortunately, this led to intimidation, harassment, and even physical assaults on staff and board members. The situation became dangerous, especially with threats of planned protests and potential attempts to storm the centre, forcing the Board to take the decision to close the site.

The Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council responded by saying that this must be a turning point for the centre. They called for a fresh start focused on transparency, unity, and involving the youth, saying that a mosque without its young people has no future. They reminded everyone that the ICCI belongs to the whole Muslim community, not just a small group. Their full statement can be read here

Financial concerns have also come to light. The new Board found serious governance and financial problems at the centre. They said some staff refused to hand over important records and even removed sensitive documents without permission. There were also false rumours online about foreign interference, but the ICCI strongly denied these, calling them baseless and damaging.

Gardaí (Irish police) confirmed they had attended the centre but said no criminal investigation had been started. Imam Sheikh Hussein Halawa described the closure as "distressing" and called on the community to avoid spreading rumours and check the truth of what they hear.

Ireland is home to around 80,000 Muslims according to the 2022 Census, and the ICCI has played a major role in serving this growing community. Many hope that after this difficult time, the centre will reopen stronger and better for everyone.
